Description
Yucca plants are tree-like succulents of the lily family (Liliaceae) with stemless stiff, pointed leaves that end in a sharp needle. The yucca flower is a series of white or purple blossoms on a long stalk. Creamy white blossoms are produced in large erect flower clusters (panicles) during late spring and summer. Many may know the unique plant by other names; Spanish bayonet, Adam's needle, Spanish dagger, bear grass. A rose by any other name. It is also colloquially known in the Midwest United States as "ghosts in the graveyard", as it is commonly found growing in rural graveyards and when in bloom the flowers appear as floating apparitions. As for me they are Yucca's. Being a proud native son of New Mexico, the "yucca flower" is the state flower of that great state.
