Description
The B-1 Lancer is a swing-wing bomber intended for high-speed, low-altitude penetration missions. The B-1B holds 61 world records for speed, payload and distance. It received the official name "Lancer" on 15 March 1990. However, the bomber has been commonly called the "Bone"; a nickname that appears to stem from an early newspaper article on the aircraft wherein its name was phonetically spelled out as "B-ONE" with the hyphen inadvertently omitted. The name given this B-1B is, 7 Wishes, tail number - #83-007-07. Stationed with the 7th Bomb Wing, Dyess AFB,Abilene, TX, the home of the 7th Bomb Wing. Aircraft nicknames are chosen by the aircraft crew chief, subject to approval by the Wing commander. Given the tail numbers and being assigned to the 7 Bomb Wing, I think its Crew Chief did not have to think to long and hard on what her name was gong to be. This Strategic Bomber is just plain "big" coming in at 147 feet (44.8 m) long, and when fully extended, its wings span about 137 feet (42 m). Looking like a jet fighter on steroids, its four General Electric turbofan engines can accelerate it past the speed of sound at its operating ceiling of 40,000 feet (12,000 m), but its normal cruising speed is subsonic.
